Why some currencies have a symbol and others do not
A currency symbol is a small piece of national identity, and earning one is a slow business. The euro sign was designed by the European Commission and unveiled in 1996, chosen from a shortlist of candidates, with its two level bars meant to suggest stability. The Indian rupee sign is younger still, picked through a public competition in 2010 and built from the letter Ra and a horizontal line.
Plenty of currencies never received a mark of their own and are written with a three-letter code instead, such as CHF for the Swiss franc or PLN for the Polish zloty. The most recent arrival in this part of Unicode is the bitcoin sign, a reminder that the list of the world money symbols is still growing.
