An alphabet that became the language of science
The Greek alphabet has been borrowed so heavily by science that most people meet its letters in a physics lesson long before they read a word of Greek. Pi measures a circle, sigma adds a series together, delta stands for change and lambda for a wavelength, each letter carrying a meaning far from its origins.
This is also why fonts carry separate symbol versions of a few letters. A mathematician needs one settled shape of phi or theta that looks the same in every textbook, so Unicode supplies both the everyday letter used for writing Greek and its specialised twin used for writing equations.
