How fancy text actually works

The styles on this page come from a corner of Unicode called Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. Mathematicians needed a bold X that meant something different from a plain X, so every letter was given bold, italic, script and other versions as separate characters in their own right. Social media users later discovered that these same characters make an ordinary post look fancy, so a bold sans-serif A here is really a maths symbol wearing a disguise.

Because each styled letter is a genuine character rather than a piece of formatting, it survives being pasted into places that strip out bold and italic, such as Instagram bios, chat names and profile pages. That is the entire trick behind every fancy text generator on the web.

There is one catch worth knowing. A screen reader will read a name written in these fancy letters as a string of mathematical symbols, or skip over it altogether, so text styled this way can be unreadable to someone using assistive technology. It is best kept for decoration rather than for anything a reader genuinely needs to understand.
